Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses

by Robin Wall Kimmerer

What an incredibly appropriate book to read while in Vancouver BC, home of mosses on every surface that can't move fast enough, and a place where settlers have en masse started (emphasis on started) thinking about what it would be like to acknowledge what they've (we've) done to get where they (we) are. Spent a lot of time thinking about what land acknowledgements can and can't do - literally performative and try-hard without changing anything concrete, yes, of course, but I now think there is actually something valuable in drawing attention repeatedly - eventually you start wondering why your actions don't match your words, and then you have to start taking action.

I am predictably now obsessed with mosses and will be seeking out some of the books in the further reading/bibliography, because of course I am.
