When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain (The Singing Hills Cycle, #2)
by Nghi Vo
I am a sucker for anything dealing with culture clashes and misunderstandings, and this delivers a delicious serving. Add in some commentary on the nature of folktales and whether any narrator can be truly reliable and how our cultural perspectives shape what we think is likely or unlikely, reasonable or unreasonable, and bonus unforced queer and transness, and chef's kiss.
I did find the ending a little jarring, but I don't know that Vo could have done much else, so I'm not mad about it. Maybe also that's the nature of collecting stories---we impose a neat ending on our narratives because in real life nothing actually begins or ends or wraps up nicely.
