I'm certainly not going to have anything smarter to say about this than Zadie Smith does. I'm glad I listened to my usual impulse to skip the foreward/introduction and come back later if at all. It's a very fucking good essay! Why on earth would you, as a book designer, put it before the very fucking good short story that it discusses in depth and uses as a launchpad into broader topics?
