Scarlet (Scarlet, #1)

by A.C. Gaughen

DNF @ 50% - I made it that far, it counts. Silly, with no redeeming qualities. Annoying first person writing style where Scarlet substitutes "I was" for "I were" to emphasize that she's a peasant. Improbable kung-fu action scenes (did they have spinning handstand kicks in the middle ages?). Paint-by-numbers love triangle. Everyone already knows that Scarlet is a girl disguised as a boy; also she won't cut her long mahogany locks because reasons and because she goes to church every weekend in a dress. The Crusades is described as "defending our country" which is ludicrous on every level -- 1) no, 2) wtf no, and 3) nationalism hadn't been invented yet!!!!
