Akiva Reads

Sadie

by Courtney Summers

I stuck this out because of other reviews saying it transcended and deconstructed the dead girl/true crime genre, but I don't agree and I wish I had called it quits. Still exploitative and sensationalist, just fictional so you can read all the gory details (and lord are the details gory) without feeling as guilty? I don't know. A nice log on the fire for our ongoing disproportionate moral panic about the trafficking and sexual abuse of white girls. (Sources: [1], [2])

Plot-wise, very well written. I'm always here for unreliable narrators, and this book has lots. It's slightly awkward as an audiobook because it highlights that people don't talk the exact same way that we write prose, but they clearly spared no expense and it's very listenable.
