Fire Above, Fire Below
by Garth Nix
Neatly illustrates why I've mostly fallen off the fantasy wagon in favor of science fiction. This is a fairly poetic story with some lovely images and ideas, but it hardly has a plot---events just happen one after another, the decisions aren't real decisions, and it couldn't have really gone any different. I like stories that ask "if this was true---then what?" This one just says "what if this was true, how cool would that be?"
