I should have known better than to trust the good reviews. Stupid universe/magic system, nonsensical character interactions, really poor writing (to the point of seeming almost unedited). But not the worst YA I've ever read, either. Thoroughly mediocre.
ETA: Christ, I forgot about the outrageous slut-shaming. That might be enough to catapult it from "mediocre" into "awful."
